List of 10 Best Search Engines alternatives to Google

Posted by Joshu on Jan 21, 2010 in All other Search, SEO Central, Webmaster Central | 11 comments

AlltheWeb is an Internet search engine that debuted in mid-1999. It grew out from FTP Search, Tor Egge’s doctorate thesis at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, which he started on in 1994, which in turn resulted in the formation of Fast Search and Transfer established on July 16, 1997. It was used primarily as a show piece site for FAST’s enterprise search engine.

astalavista.box.sk At its start in 1994, was one of the first search engines for computer security related information. In reality it turned out to be used as search engine for security exploits, software for usage in hacking and cracking and different keygenerators and software cracks. The site is also known for referencing things such as spyware and viruses. Because of this, the website is known to possibly contain data, links, downloadable files, and information some users would consider spyware, adware, or other unwanted programs.

AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL), formerly known as America Online is an American global Internet services and media company. The company was based in Northern Virginia from its founding until 2007. It is currently headquartered at 770 Broadway in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Founded in 1983 as Quantum Computer Services, it has franchised its services to companies in several nations around the world or set up international versions of its services.

Ask.com (or Ask Jeeves in the United Kingdom) is a search engine founded in 1996 by Garrett Gruener and David Warthen in Berkeley, California. The original search engine software was implemented by Gary Chevsky from his own design. Chevsky, Justin Grant, and others built the early AskJeeves.com website around that core engine. Three venture capital firms, Highland Capital Partners, Institutional Venture Partners, and The RODA Group were early investors

Cuil (pronounced /?ku?l/ “cool” according to the creators) is a search engine that organizes web pages by content and displays relatively long entries along with thumbnail pictures for many results. It claims to have a larger index than any other search engine, with about 120 billion web pages. It went live on July 28, 2008.

Cuil’s privacy policy, unlike that of other search engines, says it does not store users’ search activity or IP addresses.
Cuil is managed and developed largely by former employees of Google, Anna Patterson and Russell Power. The CEO and co-founder, Tom Costello, has worked for IBM and others. The company has raised $33 million from venture capital firms including Greylock.

Blackle is a website powered by Google Custom Search, which aims to save energy by displaying a black background and using grayish-white font color for search results

Bing (formerly Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search) is the current web search engine (advertised as a “decision engine”) from Microsoft. Bing was unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on May 28, 2009 at the All Things Digital conference in San Diego. It went fully online on June 3, 2009, with a preview version released on June 1, 2009.

ycos began as a search engine research project by Dr. Michael Loren Mauldin of Carnegie Mellon University in 1994. Bob Davis joined the company as its CEO and first employee in 1995. Lycos then enjoyed several years of growth and, in 1999, became the most visited online destination in the world, with a global presence in more than 40 countries

Dogpile is a metasearch engine that fetches results from Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Ask.com, About.com and several other popular search engines, including those from audio and video content providers. It is a registered trademark of InfoSpace, Inc

Nice list, google just cant and never will be defeated. They are truly for the people, invest millions into products and development that they hand over to us, the people, and free of charge unlike every other search engine or directory out there.
